Albert Honig’s most constant companions have always been his bees. A never-married octogenarian, he makes a modest living as a beekeeper, as his father and his father’s father did before him. Deeply acquainted with the workings of his hives, Albert is less versed in the ways of people, especially his neighbour Claire, whose beauty and vivaciousness transformed his young life. Yet years passed by, feelings were repressed, and chances missed. Until one day Albert, led by a trail of bees, discovers Claire’s body. Through the quiet minutiae of life, he begins to examine the truths that lay hidden under the secrets and silence that hovered between them for so long. With echoes of The Remains of the Day, Telling the Bees is a haunting novel about lies of omission and commission, the persistence of regret, and the sweet anguish of re-opening wounds in order to finally heal them.

Telling the Bees edition by Peggy Hesketh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a fascinating who-done-it that revolves around bee-keeping. As family secrets are revealed we also learn about the social order of bees. This book held my interest and I found it hard to put down.
I thought the book was excellent and shared it with others who I thought might enjoy it, too.
TELLING THE BEES is a rare book. It is an insightful story; the narrator a man in his 80s, the time frame shifting from his present, through his past and back again seamlessly. This is Albert's story, which he reveals one layer at a time, eventually showing us what we need to know. Every detail and character in the story rings true. It is a story about families, their relationship to the world around them and to each other; what is said and not said and how it changes their lives.

Albert still lives in the home where he grew up. He lives much the same life as his deceased parents, maintaining their orange groves and caring for their many bee hives. On the surface nothing much has changed since he was a child. Slowly, and as he cares for his bees, Albert's past is made clear, his life summed up. TELLING THE BEES is partly an historical love letter to the Southern California of the 1930s - present day,a mystery story, a biography and a manual for bee keeping. I grew up around the same time and in the same place as Albert, and found the author's attention to detail astounding. This was where I lived, and the people could have been my neighbors and relatives.

I hope that everyone will give this wonderful book a try and journey through this specific place and time. I know that this short review does not say much about the story line, it is the kind of book to explore on your own and then talk about with those you know and love.
The narrator of this story is odd, and I get a bit frustrated with his somewhat obtuse mindset, but the unraveling of the mysterious death of his neighbors is compelling. I was also caught up in the beekeeping "world." I enjoyed the story and also learned a lot! An interesting novel.
I loved this book. Not only is it a wonderful story but there is a glorious amount of information about bees and beekeeping. It is most intriguing and keep me entertained. This is one book that went too fast - I wanted it to last longer. I grew very fond of the main character and got just picture him as he tenderly cared for his bees.
Please write us another book, Peggy Kesketh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes when I buy a fiction book I feel guilty...like I'm wasting my time when I could be reading book of non-fiction and learning from the reading. Well this book merges both fiction (the plot) and non-fiction (bee-keeping). Now when I see bees in my backyard, I show them some respect! An awesome book!
This story was like riding down a gently flowing river on a raft. The writing and descriptions were beautiful. The character development was very thorough. I felt like I knew all of the characters, even the ones shrouded in a quiet mystery. I enjoyed the way the author told the story of the bees along with the story of the Bee Ladies. I have already begun recommending this book to others.
