The Final Key Triad Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Catherine Asaro Suzanne Weintraub Audible Studios Books
The Final Key (2005) is the second SF novel in the Triad duology and the eleventh in the Skolian Imperialate sequence, following Schism. The initial work in this sequence is Primary Inversion. In the previous volume, Althor came home to Lyshriol in a Jag starfighter. Soz observed the fighter landing on the minute starport and recognized its type. She was determined to leave the planet in it.
Shannon saw the starfighter and ran over the plains toward home. Del also noticed the fighter and informed his father of its presence. Then Kelric slammed into the house with the same news.
Kelric watched two people in dark clothes leave the Jag and cross the tarmac. They were met by a woman from the port and then headed toward Dalvador and the castle. Eldri realized that one visitor was Althor.
Later Soz met the woman and learned that she was Colonel Tahota. She had come with Althor because he was only allowed to fly the Jag with an instructor onboard. She also wanted to talk to Soz about admission to the Dieshan Military Academy.
In this novel, Dyhianna Selei is the Ruby Pharaoh, the titular ruler of the Skolian Imperialate. Dehya is the most powerful telop in the Ruby Empire. She is the wife of Dryni and mother of Taquinil.
Roca is the sister of Dehya and the wife of Elrinson. She has been married to Eldri for decades and has had ten children by him.
Kurj is the only child of Roca's first marriage. He is the Imperator, military chief of the Skolian Imperialate.
Eldrinson Althor Valdoria is a bard and warrior on Lyshriol -- known to offworlders as Skyfall -- and the ruler of Dalvador. Eldri is married to Roca and has ten children by her.
Eldrin Jarac Valdoria is the first child of Eldri and Roca. Dryni is a Bard like his father. He is now married to his aunt Dehya by order of the Assembly.
Althor Izam-Na Valdoria is the second child of Eldri and Roca. He is now a Jagernaut, but mindless due to combat damage in the battle near Onyx.
Del-Kurj Valdoria is the third child of Eldri and Roca. Del is also a Bard like his father and the twin of Chaniece.
Chaniece Roca Valdoria is the fourth child of Eldri and Roca and Del's twin. She tends to run the family.
Havyrl Torcelle Valdoria is the fifth child of Eldri and Roca. Vyrl is married to Lily and has three children.
Sauscony Lahaylia Valdoria is the sixth child of Eldri and Roca. Soz is now a senior at the Dieshan Military Academy. Eldri has banished her from Dalvador.
Shannon Eirlei Valdoria is the eighth child of Eldri and Roca. He has inherited the traits of a Blue Dale Archer from a distant ancestor.
Aniece Dyhiann Valdoria is the ninth child of Eldri and Roca.
Kelricson Garlin Valdoria is the tenth -- and youngest -- child of Eldri and Roca. Kelric also wants to be a Jagernaut.
Vitarex Raziquon is a Trader Aristo. He infiltrated Lyshriol and tortured Eldri.
In this story, Dryni is having nightmares from his father's ordeal. These dreams are affecting Dehya and frightening Taquinil. Dryni can calm his son while he is awake, but still agitates him while asleep.
A neuro specialist examining Dehya wants to give her a drug to relax her Psion nerves. Dehya objects at first, but gives in. Her tensions fade away and she becomes amorous with Dryni.
Dryni tries the same drug at twenty percent of the dosage given to Dehya, but it causes his mind to fade away and fall sleep. Taquinil also doesn't like this mind state, but Dryni doesn't have nightmares. Dryni halves the dosage and the drug keeps away the nightmares without putting him in a daze. Yet the drug is very addictive.
Finally Dryni moves out of the Orbiter and goes down to Diesha to put some distance between himself and his son. He moves into the Ruby Palace with Kurj. Dryni gets along with Kurj better than anyone else in the family except Roca.
A year later, Roca visits Soz at the DMA. She brings Eldri, who has recovered from the damage to his eyes and legs caused by Vitarex. He is still somewhat shaky in the legs. He apologizes for banning Soz and Althor from their home and invites Soz to return at any time.
It is too late to apologize to his son. Althor is still mindless from his combat damage. He is being kept alive by machines only because of his family's unwillingness to pull the plug.
Soz visits Althor every evening unless she has duty. Then she is sent to a battlecruiser for training. She still misses Althor, but is very engrossed with her new duties.
The Skolian Assembly will meet on Raylicon to discuss attacks by the Eubian Concord. Dehya and Roca prepare to attend the Assembly. Dehya asks Roca to finish some routine mesh procedures before she leaves.
Roca realizes that Dehya wants her to learn more about the functions of the Dyad as her backup during these troubled time. Roca is strapped into the massive Chair and opens communications with its intelligence. The Dyad Chair shows her a room in the Ruby Palace with Kurj lying unconscious in his bed.
This tale makes the ISC aware of power spikes in the mesh. Kurj and Dryni are poisoned by Aristo assassin machines. The First Councilor of the Skolian Imperialate declares war against the Eubian Concord.
Eldri finds himself responsible for the safety of Taquinil. The next installment in this sequence is The Ruby Dice.
Highly recommended for Asaro fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of interstellar politics, covert action, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

The Final Key Triad Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Catherine Asaro Suzanne Weintraub Audible Studios Books Reviews
Love this series and all the books i have read so far.
The Final Key is part 2 in a long and complicated SF series by Catherine Asaro.
The most notable thing about Catherine's writing is that it has a lot of good science in the SF. This is the real stuff not a copy of someone else's SF writing.
The Skolian Empire series is still evolving and is a rather good read. I like it a lot.
"The Final Key" is another fill in the gaps novel in the Skolian Empire series covering events of many characters during events covered in earlier novels in the series. As a result some of the material is rehashed which helps it as a stand alone but hinders it a bit for those who have been following along by going over it yet again. Some of the problems are the expansion of the series now sees more problems in the subordinate characters which was not indicated in the earlier works, which strains the readers' credulity a bit, such as addictions, other relationships, etc. All in all though a worthwhile addition.
This novel continues the plot lines delineated in Part One of the Triad, as the Ruby Dynasty continues to evolve Roca and Eldrin, as well as their chldren, are faced with danger and death, and none come out the same as they were. When the Eubian Trader empire unleashes multiple assassination attacks, the family must deal with death and separation, and Soz faces a huge challenge, on duty on a cruiser when war breaks out and the mesh crashes.
This is another fine novel from Asaro the characters are engaging and growing, the plot twists are surprising, and unexpected folks must step up and defend the Ruby Dynasty's empire.
"The Final Key" is not only the sequel to "Schism"; it's also the prequel to "Primary Inversion," the book that launched Ms. Asaro's Skolian Empire series.
Here, Soz is just about finished with her cadet training when the Eubians manage to sabotage the Skolian defenses and create chaos.
A suspenseful and well paced battle scene is the centerpiece of the book, and a suspenseful and excruciating battle with drug addiction serves as a great B story. As is usually the case with Catherine Asaro, she makes her characters seem like real people, and maybe you'll relate to Soz's fears as circumstances force her to assume a role she's not yet qualified to fill, and the struggles of Eldrin to free himself from his addiction.
As a sequel, the book finishes the tale begun in "Schism" very neatly, but as a prequel, some of the suspense is lost, because longtime readers know what will happen to the various Skolians down the line.
Newcomers to the series obviously should not start here, but either with "Primary Inversion" or "Schism." (A time line at the back of the book will guide those new readers.)
Notes and Asides. To Ms. Asaro can we have more about the Blue Dale Archers, please? To Ms. Asaro's publisher can we please have the short stories, doubtlessly all published in different places, that are mentioned in the timeline in a one- or two-volume collection? Thanks.
Catherine is the most heartfelt SF author that ever existed amongst Earth's creatures. She has a phenomenal imagination, integrated with science knowledge technically tethered to a human heart. Her literature clearly exposes excellent impregnation of physics into her imagination, how advanced technology would affect a human. Many SF authors intentionally minimize or omit human emotion, with their primary intent to convey prediction of scientific evolution, with much of their work awe-inspiring and truly deserves their award and credit. Nonetheless, Asaro's perception of a universe is unique and gratifying. It actually changed the way I think about our existence.
